Gatorade Lemon-Lime is the original and flagship flavour of Gatorade, created in 1965 at the University of Florida by a team of scientists led by Dr. Robert Cade. It was developed specifically to combat dehydration and electrolyte loss in athletes training in extreme heat. Lemon-Lime was chosen because citrus flavours were found to be the most palatable during intense physical exertion. The flavour became commercially available nationwide in the late 1960s and remains the brand’s best-selling variant in the U.S., closely tied to professional sports sponsorships (NFL, NBA, NCAA).
